THE GET DOWN
Back in the day, word on the street had it that the guys serving fish tacos by the viaduct on Beaudry street had it goin on.
In fact, I had a friend visiting from Oregon that first told me about them (how on EARTH did HE find out?) At first bite, I knew they were onto something here and it was only a matter of time when this deliciousness would transfer to its own storefront.
NOW, located on the perimeters of Echo Park, heading into Chinatown, Mexicali attracts people from all of its surrounding areas. Its super casual environment with picnic table seating will guarantee you will be sitting next to a newly found friend. But no worries, you’ll at least have one thing in common with them: you’ll love Mexicali too.
Mexicali specializes in Baja cuisine, yet doesn’t have any fish on the menu except shrimp. The crisped tortilla shells at Mexicali are the perfect size to fit a mound of meat. It’s like an edible plate. And I love places where you can get a fish taco that’s NOT fried. In fact, the fish tacos at Mexicali are made with grilled shrimp.
For the fussy tot, Mexicali has quesadillas and guacamole (though they might be partial to garlic).
Be sure to try everything in the salsa bar, until you top your taco juuuuust right.

Here, you can forget the fact that it’s your rambunctious child that’s screaming and STILL enjoy most of your meal.
Not promoted, but you should take the chance:
If your toddler is at the stage when an iPad or some other colorful distraction can be used for an un-interrupted 20 minutes, then go for it.
Uh-uh, NO WAY, don’t even think about it!:
I don’t care how cute your toddler is. Pop your head in… turn around… walk away. PERIOD.
No contained area:
A place you cannot leave your toddler alone, not even for a second.
Enclosed, but space is tight:
If YOU can’t fit between the tables then you know you couldn’t catch your toddler if they tried – this isn’t Norm’s.
