Moonlight Rollerway

THE GET DOWN

Moonlight Rollerway is the best reminder of that slow life. The days when your word was your word and you would show up at the roller rink at 8pm…period. The days when the roller rink was a cool hang for everyone.

Dudes with picks in their hair would be dancing backwards in the middle of the rink, awkward teenage girls would slowly stand around waiting to be asked to skate a “couples only” song, and the little kids learning to skate would wipe out left and right, but get up like soldiers and keep moving forward.

Sure, immediate family members may have bruised a tailbone every now and then, but no matter what, no ONE ever stopped having fun at the roller rink.

Moonlight Rollerway froze this exact period in time. Not only has Moonlight Rollerway remained untouched since the mid 60’s when it first opened (as Harry’s Roller Rink), but this whiff of nostalgia has brought about a culture in all generations.

Ahhh. Nothing like your wheels hitting Rollerway’s 2 ¼ inch maple floor when you’re first trying to hop in the rink. The loud and groovy music doesn’t even make you think of this as exercise. In fact, you’re getting better each loop around.

Hey, that groovy guy is still dancing on air, the tween stage still looks awkward and now YOUR kids are still tripping left and right. Yep, stand up like a soldier and keep moving forward. This is what’s up at Moonlight Rollerway. Its just good old fashioned fun.

Helpful Hints:
1. Bring a bunch of singles for the quarter’s machine. You will need $.50 every time you enter your locker (and yes, they are still the lockers that give you a key)
2. There is a café with the usual kid friendly snacks. Outside food is not permitted.
3. A kid friendly guard rail can be rented for $5, but can only be used during day time skating hours.
4. Juuuuust in case someone doesn’t tell you why you’re getting so many receipts at the front door, the little square receipts are for your skate rental which you pay for OUTSIDE.
5. Skate lessons for the 12 and under crowd are provided on Saturday mornings.

Rating System:

It’s our goal to make exploring LA either with the kids or with grown ups as easy as possible. Click through the tabs above to check out our rating system.

For those with little
runners & screamers:

Easily forgiven:

Here, you can forget the fact that it’s your rambunctious child that’s screaming and STILL enjoy most of your meal.

Not promoted, but you should take the chance:

If your toddler is at the stage when an iPad or some other colorful distraction can be used for an un-interrupted 20 minutes, then go for it.

Uh-uh, NO WAY, don’t even think about it!:

I don’t care how cute your toddler is. Pop your head in… turn around… walk away. PERIOD.

No contained area:

A place you cannot leave your toddler alone, not even for a second.

Enclosed, but space is tight:

If YOU can’t fit between the tables then you know you couldn’t catch your toddler if they tried – this isn’t Norm’s.
